About us

Planning permission for the Truthan Barton Turbines has been submitted.  The developers are well organised. There is lots of money at stake for them, so they have engaged an array of up-county professionals to get this proposal through. They say they have spend £500,000 so far. The only way for us to resist is through the democratic planning process.

If you want to object now is time. You need to do this before May 29th 2009 for it to have an impact.

Advice on how to object can be found by following this link.

Remember … this development will have a major impact on all of us: our community, our landscape, our quality of life, our homes, our families. This development is still just a proposal, if we want to stop it we can.... but we must act.

It cannot go ahead without planning permission. Track the progress of the Coronation Power proposal here.

Planning Step Explanation
Confidential Exclusive Agreement Option with landowners signed The developer's first step was to pay local landowners for the option to develop the Turbines and their commitment to confidentiality. The local landowner is then obliged not to talk to his/her neighbours about the size of the turbines, their potential location, or the sums of money involved.

Coronation Power have made these agreements with local land owners.

Advisor appointed to handle planning process The developers do not handle the planning permission  themselves, instead they hire professional firms with experience of dealing with the planning system all over the country.

In this case, the firm concerned is RPS, an international firm with substantial experience of pursuing Wind Turbine building projects.

Wind measuring equipment planning permission granted, April 2008 You can see the initial planning request by following this link. As you can see, there was no community involvement in the approval meeting, and no attempt to notify neighbours of the purpose of the mast.
Wind measuring equipment build, May 2008 The 60 metre (almost 200 feet) mast can be seen quite easily from the A39 on the Truthan Barton farm. It has wind measuring equipment attached to it.

This mast is less than half the height of the Turbines Coronation Power say they will build.

Public Exhibition, October 2008 Coronation Power held its first public exhibition in St Erme Village Hall on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th of October. We think the presentation was one-sided.

In particular, we think the photographs did not give a realistic view of the full impact of these industrial structures on the landscape.

Further attempts to build local support are likely. Coronation Power will offer money to the village to try to persuade us that Turbines are a good thing for us.

On their website, they claim to be committed to listening to the views of local people and to doing their utmost to address our concerns.

Coronation Power is a small London-based developer owned entirely by one man. Its most recent accounts show it to be making a loss. You must reach your own views about whether it's interested in your views, or in getting planning permission and making a great deal of money.

Parish Council meeting , may 2009
The Parish Council arranged a meeting to gauge local opinion at the St Erme Village hall on Thursday May 14th. 125 people attended, including the principal landowner connected with the planning application.  All the speakers except this landowner expressed strong opposition to the scheme on the basis of the size of the turbines, their proximity to the village, noise, health, impact on water supplies, as well as, loss of amenity for the villagers for walking and cricket.

The landowner defended the proposal of the developer bravely, although he did not appear to understand it fully. He did not appear to persuade anyone.
